The Motorola Defy has a 6.5” HD IPS display and a 720p resolution with a 60Hz refresh rate, allowing an average quality media viewing. It won’t be the best for pro gaming but that is expected from a rugged phone in this price range.
On the back of the phone there is a Quad Camera set up: a main 48MP camera, macro lens, selfie snapper and a depth sensor. We found that the main camera took good images in daylight, however if surroundings are quite dark the image is rather grainy. The macro camera made images a little unsaturated but providing the image is taken near enough to the object, the actual image is clear and crisp.
To test out the durability of the Defy we went to a lake to dip it into murky water and drop it onto different surfaces such as dirt and concrete to see how rugged it really was. Our results found that even when it was wet and dirty it worked to the same ability as before which we found impressive. The screens sensitivity was up to scratch as if it were dry, which we feel is key for a phone built for outdoor challenges. The corners of the phone did show light scuffing due to being dropped but the screen was unscratched. The phone comes with a heavy-duty wrist strap that attaches to the bottom of the phone for further drop prevention.
In our opinion the size and weight of this device is great for a rugged phone as it is not too heavy, and the screen is big enough to view media. Overall, the number of protective features provided for the price of this phone holds great value for money.
The main drawback to this phone is the camera quality as it did struggle to pick up detail when there was not enough light, and it also left macro images slightly unsaturated. To summarise, this phone is perfectly rugged for someone on a budget – we definitely recommend!
